Truck Job - Can You Apply?

The fact that you are here makes it obvious that you are looking for something different in a career, something exciting and rewarding, such as a truck job. It takes a special kind of person to become a trucker, a good one that is. It can be a hard and challenging life, particularly for those who choose to specialise in OTR driving. But lets face it, you are not even going to be thinking of this if you dislike being away from home for more than a day at a time, let alone several weeks at a time. There are however, so many different angles that you can approach a truck job with that somewhere you will be able to find one that exactly suits you, all you need is a love of your work, the appropriate license and you are ready to go.

One of the often overlooked advantages of a truck job is that if you are starting out young then you will find that you are able to chop and change throughout the industry working the hours and runs that suit you. You don't want to be away from home and your loved ones for more than a day at a time then you certainly don't apply for that long distance truck job. There are bound to be local carriers in your area that will have you home in time for dinner every night of the week. And if the occasional stay away is OK, and you are more flexible then you are bound to find a truck job like this as well.

The market is so huge in the US for truck drivers that finding a truck job that suits should not be difficult. If you are new to trucks and don't know which way to progress from here then these are the things that you will need to have:

1. A keen willingness to learn. There is a lot to know about safely driving these big trucks, and the safety issue is strongly emphasized in training and by your employer.

2. Your CDL. There are many avenues open to obtaining your Commercial Drivers License. Community Colleges and private schools offer most of the training for those wishing to obtain their CDL. Some carriers provide their own training schools but you are then contracted to work for them for several years. In order to enrol or obtain a CDL you will have to provide a copy of a valid driver’s license and a copy of a physical examination on a DOT form. Students must be able to pass a drug screen if administered. Applicants must possess a driving record free of current serious violations.

3. Your truck job. Once you have obtained your CDL then chances are you would have been employed before you even finish your course. This is normal for many of the fully accredited schools as they allow the recruiters in before the courses finish and a great number of students will be signed up ready to start their new truck job before their course is even finished. Such is the demand for well trained drivers.

There are of course other avenues to finding a good truck job, depending on your present qualifications and experience. If you have been out of the industry for a while then you may need to attend a refresher course just to satisfy any prospective employer that you are up to scratch with all the rules and regulations before you begin your truck job.
