Today's truck driver job carries with it far more prestige than at any time in the past. It also comes with increased responsibility, pressure and challenges. There is always a deadline to meet, and unforseen challenges seem to crop up at inopportune times as is their habit. But for those that have made a life-long commitment to the truck driving industry, they could never imagine themselves working at anything except a truck driver job. When they feel their trucking days are over they often move into management positions, but they still stay faithfully with the industry.
It all begins with a passion for these multi-wheeled monsters. These are the men and women who commit to a truck driver job through the good and bad times. Their passion sees them through when the going gets tough. They have a special bond with their big rigs which is apparent in the way they handle them through difficult terrain and driving conditions. It is apparent in the smooth gear changes executed with perfect synchronisation. Many owner drivers take their truck driving job to an even higher level, painting their much beloved trucks with the most amazing artwork for all to admire.
The truck driver job is a very individual thing to all drivers. For some it is the love of the open roads and the easy silence of the engine as it purrs along, and for others it is the excitement of continually changing scenery and the camaraderie of fellow truckers at each truck stop. And for others, it is simply a job, a means to an end, a way to earn a living. These are the ones that will come and go in the industry never staying long in any particular truck driver job, and the first ones to complain when things are not going their way.
Novice drivers may find their first truck driver job full of trials and tribulations as they make their way in this new and exciting world. There is much to learn and many miles to be traveled as they gain the experience that is required of them to reach the professional driver level. School only teaches them the basics of driving, and it is not until they start their first truck driver job that they realise the real world of driving trucks is far different to what a lot of them had imagined. Engine problems and tyre blow-outs are just a few of the more ordinary things that they have to deal with. Modern technology though is fortunately on the side of the trucker these days. The modern rigs make the truck driver job easier than it has ever been before. GPS is standard, and many long distance trucks are computer monitored from base. Engine problems are detected, fuel consumption is calculated, and the trucker has a link to family and friends through email and mobile phone. Sleeper cabs have been modernised resembling a mini-version of a motel room providing not only standing room but fridge, microwave, bed and storage. All things designed to make the truck driver job easier on those long distance runs from home.
